What is an AAU membership?

An AAU membership is a membership with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), a nationwide organization that promotes amateur sports, including youth volleyball.

What It’s For:

An AAU membership is required to participate in AAU-sanctioned events, such as:

  • Club volleyball tournaments and leagues
  • Practices and tryouts
  • Nationals and Super Regionals
  • Other multisport AAU events

Key Benefits:

  • Insurance coverage during AAU events and practices
  • Access to AAU tournaments and competitions nationwide
  • Affordable membership fees (often lower than USAV)
  • Encourages broad participation with fewer restrictions on team formation or coaching

Types of Memberships:

  • Athlete Membership – for players
  • Non-Athlete Membership – for coaches, club directors, officials
  • Annual (Sept 1–Aug 31), renewed each yearAAU is especially popular for teams looking for a more flexible, cost-effective alternative to USAV competition, though many clubs participate in both.
