Serving
Can utilize underhand or overhand serves to get the ball over the net at least 20% of the time
Serve Receive
Often cannot pass to target, tends to stand erect when serve is approaching, may have hands connected prior to being in position to connect with ball
Passing (Underhand) & Bumping
Does not have a proper passing form, will likely have hands together prior to contacting ball. Little to no control in the height or distance of pass
Passing (Overhand)
Does not have a proper passing form, will likely have hands too close together or too far apart prior to contacting ball. Little to no control in the height or distance of pass. Will often use touches resulting in a call of a 'Lift' or 'double'
Setting & Tossing (Overhand and Forearm)
Unreliable and inconsistent with overhand sets. Can be called on lifting the ball or having a double touch on at least 40% of sets.
Attacking & Hitting
Likely will not jump when attacking due to inabiltiy to tine attacking motion of arm with jumping motion. Still developing ability to hit the ball while not in contact with the ground.
Blocking
Will likely not use blocks due to inability to reach above the net or block without coming in contact with the net
Defensive Positioning
Unaware of proper positioning
Offensive Positioning
Unaware of proper positioning
Rotation & Placement
Unaware of proper positioning/ placement
Court communication
Does not and cannot communicate accurately while on the court
Court Awareness
May not know where to stand on the court at the beginning or end of plays and is often out of position. Will not know appropriate times to go after ball in play.
B - Beginner Intermediate
Serving
Can utilize underhand or overhand serves to get the ball over the net at least 50% of the time
Serve Receive
Can serve receive resulting in a playable pass. Passes will go toward target in 40-60% of all scenarios. depending on the difficulty of the serve.
Passing (Underhand) & Bumping
Can pass high arc balls to target but experiences significantly greater difficulty when the ball is attacked in their direction. May initally choose the wrong type of pass based on misreading the attacker.
Passing (Overhand)
Can pass high arc balls to target but experiences significantly greater difficulty when the ball is attacked in their direction. May initally choose the wrong type of pass based on misreading the attacker.
Setting & Tossing (Overhand and Forearm)
Fairly reliable though inconsistent sets. May rely more heavily on forearm sets due to poor positioning or inconsistency getting a usable set from open-hand sets. Sets often have sufficient height or distance but usually lack in one domain and rarely have both.
Attacking & Hitting
Fairly consistent at attacking the ball from a standing position without an approach. Not particularly skilled at placing the ball but can keep the ball in play more often than not. If attempting a swing with a jump and approach, will be inconsistent with effectiveness.
Blocking
Will attempt to use blocks but be inefficient due to inability to reach above the net or block without coming in contact with the net. Also a risk of dangerous foot placement.
Defensive Positioning
Only knows middle- sets positioning and will not be particularly useful unless the ball is in their immediate vicinity
Offensive Positioning
Only knows middle- sets positioning and will not be particularly useful unless the ball is in their immediate vicinity
Rotation & Placement
Will likely function best in a "middle sets" due to some ability to set but is developing skills to learn and move in an official rotation
Court communication
Often does not communicate ideas or situations though capable. The player may occasionally offer support or guidance to other players but cannot be relied upon for consistent and/ or accurate information.
Court Awareness
Often misreads location of self and/ or ball. Will put in either too much or too little effort in getting to easily playable balls. Often makes overly aggressive or overly passive plays due to poor knowledge of self in relation to the court.
BB - Advanced Intermediate
Serving
Can overhand serve to any zone on court at will at least 80% of the time
Serve Receive
Can pass to target more times than not for most serves. May have difficulty with more complex serves (e.g. jump float, jump serves)
Passing (Underhand) & Bumping
No issues passing balls that arc over the net. Can pass consistently (75% or greater) to target regardless of the strength or speed of the incoming ball if the ball is easily playable. Player puts in effort to position themselves and pausing to improve passing ability.
Passing (Overhand)
Can accurately decide when to use an overhand pass and pass directly to target in 75-85% of situations where is it appropriate
Setting & Tossing (Overhand and Forearm)
Reliable and consistent overhand sets. Can run basic sets with ease such as 5s 4s, 3s, 2s, and 1s. Ball control and accuracy slightly varies with quality and accuracy of the pass
Attacking & Hitting
Can diversify between hitting line, cross, or roll shots depending on the position of the opposition. Has developed a consistent approach which will most often be used with jumping unless the set or position of the defense warrants a change.
Blocking
Coordinated and well-timed blocks. May have difficulty switching between soft and hard blocks. Blocker may also have some difficulty in coordinating blocks with others but is a defensive asset overall.
Defensive Positioning
Positions self strategically to be in position to make defensive plays based on the most likely offensive play. May still be just out of position to make a solid defensive play.
Offensive Positioning
Positions self strategically to be in position to make the most efficient offensive play. May still be just out of position to support an attacker or make a beneficial offensive play.
Rotation & Placement
Knows how to run a 5-1, 6-2, 4-2 without direction or assistance
Court communication
Can identify and calls out different plays based on the most likely situation (e.g. free balls, backrow attacks, top spin serves, etc.)
Court Awareness
Can serve and position self on court consistently and able to identify the ball landing in or out. Makes occasional judgment errors based on poor positioning, lack of confidence, or overconfidence.
Serving
Can use a diverse arsenal of serves that can be placed in the court regardless of the variation of the serve
Serve Receive
Can pass to target most serves (85% or more)
Passing (Underhand) & Bumping
No issues passing balls that arc over the net. Can pass consistently (90% or greater) to target regardless of thee strength or speed of the incoming ball if the ball is easily playable. Player puts in effort to position themselves and pausing to improve passing ability.
Passing (Overhand)
No issues passing balls that arc over the net. Can pass consistently (85% or greater) to target regardless of thee strength or speed of the incoming ball if the ball is easily playable. Player puts in effort to position themselves and pausing to improve passing ability.
Setting & Tossing (Overhand and Forearm)
Reliable and consistent overhand sets. Can run basic sets of BB level as well as more complex sets such as shoots, 31s and 32s. On poorer quality passes, setter can still position ball to maximize offensive capability given sufficient time to get to ball. *May be able to above mentioned skills with overhand sets and/ or forearm sets.
Attacking & Hitting
Can regularly hit downward and in the court with significant force and can diversify attacking offense depending on the positoning of the opposition. Has developed a consistent approach which will most often be used with jumping unless the set or position of the defense warrants a change.
Blocking
Coordinated and well-times bocks, often using blocks to suppress the opposing offense or force the direction of an attacker's swing. Can coordinate well with sight blockers or read blockers
Defensive Positioning
Knows and moves intuitively based on the position(s) of the attacking team
Offensive Positioning
Knows and moves intuitively based on the position(s) of the attacking player and the defensive team's positioning
Rotation & Placement
Knows variations of positions associated with 5-1, 6-2, and 4-2 rotations that still abide by the rotation limitations
Court communication
Can identify and regulary calls out different plays based on the most likely situation (e.g. free balls, backrow attacks, top spin serves, etc.)
Court Awareness
Can serve and position self on court consistently and able to identify the ball landing in or out in time for others to be notified prior to getting in contact with ball
