Schedules are fluid (translation: don’t over-plan)
Match times can change with little notice.
Pools may finish early or run late.
Bracket play often depends on results from other courts. 👉 Build in buffer time and avoid booking tight flights or non-refundable activities.
2. Expect long days at the venue
Players may be at the convention center 8–10+ hours.
There’s a lot of waiting between matches.
Seating is limited — bring a cushion, park chair or plan breaks. 👉 Snacks, water, phone chargers, extension cord (for multiple devices) and layers are clutch.
3. Hotels & travel add up fast
Tournament hotels can be expensive and sell out early.
Parking at venues may be paid and limited.
Allow enough travel time from venue to sports center and anticipate travel delays and/or locating the court.
On time is late
Late is late
EARLY IS ON TIME!
Some venues are far from hotels/restaurants. 👉 Book early, read cancellation policies, and check commute times.
4. Food planning matters more than you think
Venue food is often pricey and not athlete friendly.
Meal timing can be unpredictable. 👉 Pack healthy snacks, quick meals, and recovery food (protein, fruit, electrolytes).
5. Players need rest, even if they don’t ask for it
Late nights + early call times = tired legs.
Walking the city all evening after a full day of matches isn’t ideal. 👉 Prioritize sleep, hydration, and light movement over sightseeing marathons.
6. Parents’ role: support, not sideline coaching
Coaches manage playing time and strategy.
Emotional support from parents is huge — technical feedback usually isn’t helpful mid-tournament. 👉 Post-match vibe > post-match analysis.
7. Team travel rules matter
Clubs often have policies about:
Hotel stay requirements – Events can have a stay to play requirement.
Transportation – Everyone is responsible for their own transportation to and from.
8. Supervision
Sports complexes come in all sizes. Please make sure your athlete is always with a teammate when away from the team – eg, snack or bio run.
Team will stay together in between matches. 👉 Read them carefully — they’re about safety, compliance, and team culture.
9. Communication is key
Our club uses Team Snap for all communications first and foremost. For other easier methods where we need to attach a form or send a video, we may flex to email instead or text.
Last-minute court or time changes happen. 👉 Check messages frequently and silence notifications during matches.
10. Tournaments are development, not just results
Playing time may vary.
Coaches may test new lineups or roles. 👉 One weekend does not define a player’s season or future.
11. The vibe can be intense — for everyone
Big crowds, loud gyms, high emotions.
Your athlete will feed off your energy. 👉 Calm, positive, consistent support goes a long way.
